West Central Initiative is excited to welcome Tobias Buening and Magnus Holtmann as its 2025 Energy Engineering Interns from Germany. In these roles, Tobias and Magnus will support efforts to advance clean energy initiatives, improve regional energy efficiency, and help identify sustainable engineering solutions that benefit west central Minnesota. Tobias and Magnus are both studying Industrial Engineering at FH Münster in Germany

“Having Magnus and Tobias on our team allows us to offer support to our communities in a new and meaningful way,” said Energy and Adaptation Planner Griffin Peck. “Their expertise in industrial engineering and energy systems is helping us develop frameworks to adopt energy-efficient and cost-saving strategies. They bring fresh ideas and a unique perspective to our work—and in return, they get to experience America through the lens of west central Minnesota.”

Magnus Holtmann

Magnus is studying Energy Technology. He was drawn to the field because it combines technical and business knowledge and addresses important global issues like the energy transition.

“I’ve always been interested in the United States, so interning at West Central Initiative felt like the perfect opportunity to take on a new challenge while gaining experience in renewable energy,” said Magnus. “I’m excited to learn more about the culture in Minnesota, see how it differs from Germany, and improve my English along the way.”

Tobias Buening

Tobias is studying Electrical Engineering. He chose his path after completing vocational training in business, wanting to build technical skills in a future-focused field like electrical engineering.

“Interning at West Central Initiative gives me the chance to complete my degree while stepping out of my comfort zone and experiencing a new culture,” said Tobias. “I’m especially excited to be involved in the solar panel project, apply my knowledge in real-world settings, and learn more about climate issues through hands-on experiences across the region.”

Outside of their work, Tobias and Magnus are excited to explore Minnesota nature, attend sporting events like the Minnesota Timberwolves, and experience everyday life in a new culture. While Tobias is training for a half-marathon and hopes to try as many water sports as possible, Magnus is determined to finally catch his first fish after a few unsuccessful attempts back in Germany.
